The Role of Clothes in Developing Kids’ Personality

Once a well-known cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead said, "Children must be taught how to think, not what to think," and we couldn't agree more. This statement applies to Kid's clothing as well. Kids’ should be taught how to dress for the appropriate occasion or weather rather than just implying what they should wear. There should be a reason behind their styling.

Children are extremely expressive and express themselves boldly with their cute voices, body movements, and clothes. All these factors, especially clothes, contribute to developing their personality. Once they are old enough to understand, they will experiment with their clothing style to express their identity and personality. Some kids would want to dress like their own parents, while some would like to dress like their favourite character, and some couldn't care less about clothes at all. Yes, all these tantrums are building up their personality in a teeny tiny way. Even if their choice of clothing is not appropriate for the occasion, even if they want to dress as a superman or superwoman, let them make a choice.

If you are still not convinced that letting your kids choose their clothes is the best alternative for developing their personality, you might after reading this:

Teach Responsibility: How To Be Responsible & Avoid Mistakes.

For adults who want their kids to grow up as responsible & critical thinking adults, letting them pick clothes, their colour, texture, pattern, etc., is very important. Let them decide if they prefer shorts over denim, a shirt over a t-shirt, or sliders over shoes. It will give them a sense of responsibility that now they have to select their clothes, and what they pick will reflect on them.

The Reason You Should Encourage Independence:

When your children are allowed the freedom to decide what to wear, whether they choose to wear mismatched plaids and printed outfits, a monochromatic outfit, or even a minimal outfit, it is developing their perception and problem-solving skills & self-expression. It will also give them the feeling of independence that they do not have to rely on you to choose daily clothes.

Tips for Flexible and Frugal Cultural Development:

If you are attending an event, let your kid choose their clothes even if they are not appropriate. When your kids see other kids dressed properly at the event, they will understand what an appropriate outfit is for the occasion. On the other hand, if you will tell them to dress a certain way, they might rebel. It's up to you how you guide your children, but allowing them to use clothing as a means of self-discovery enables important life lessons and skills.

The Keys to Building Strong Character:

Even if your lovely child wants to wear a bright yellow every day, let him; they are learning about their current preferences, supporting himself, and learning how clothing can be utilized to identify himself. Rather than forcing your cute little ones to wear certain clothing, interact with them. Talk to them about how it's getting cold outside, and one should probably wear warm clothes, full sleeves t-shirt, etc. It is a subtle way to teach them which outfit is the perfect choice for the day. It will also allow them to express their identity safely and naturally.
